History

The roots of the Abresch family lie in Neustadt an der Weinstraße. As early as the 19th century, Karl Philipp Abresch supplied timber for railway sleepers and wine barrels. His brother Johann Philipp Abresch made democratic history at the Hambach Festival in May 1832: he carried the first black, red and gold flag, which later became the symbol of German democracy and the origin of today’s national flag.

The history of the timber wholesale business as it exists today began in 1954, when Heinrich Abresch and his wife Eva-Maria laid the foundation stone for the company in Viernheim. He already brought entrepreneurial experience with him: at the age of 18 he had taken over the management of the family-owned metal goods factory Carl Liebmann in Stadtilm near Erfurt.

In Viernheim, Heinrich Abresch expanded the timber wholesale business step by step. The company developed into a reliable supplier and partner to the construction, building materials, steel and packaging industries.

In 1978 Heinrich Abresch founded a second company, Abresch Industrieverpackung GmbH, for tailor-made solutions in demanding overseas transport. Since the turn of the year 2025/2026, the timber wholesale business and the industrial packaging company have been completely separated. Since then, Holz Abresch has once again concentrated entirely on its original core business: timber wholesale. The company supplies customers in Germany and in neighbouring European countries.

Heike Abresch now runs the family business in its second generation. Together with an experienced team she continues what began in 1954 – personally, reliably and with short decision-making paths.
